Glacierland Council is accepting registrations for the 2019 Northeast Wisconsin Woodland Owners Conference.  The Conference will be held Saturday, January 26, 2019 at Northeast Wisconsin Technical College in Green Bay.  The Woodland Owners Conference will feature speakers focusing on topics of interest to private woodland owners.  Topics include:  managing woodlands for whitetail deer, forest health issues, the MFL Program, and a panel addressing concerns and opportunities for woodland owners.

Curt Rollman, a Deer Biologist for the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (WIDNR) who covers northeastern Wisconsin, will talk to landowners about management techniques to improve their woodlands for whitetail deer.  Curt did his graduate research on deer impacts on northern hardwoods forests, he has been in natural resources education and work for 14 years, 4 of which have been with the WDNR.

Dr. Bill McNee, WIDNR Forest Health Specialist will provide updates on forest health issues and concerns. Bill primarily works with the detection and management of non-native insects and diseases such as emerald ash borer, gypsy moth and beech bark disease and he currently serves on the executive committee of the National Gypsy Moth Management Board.

Sue Crowley, Northeast Forest Tax Law Team Leader for the WIDNR, will speak on the Managed Forest Law (MFL) program. Sue works with a team of 10 DNR Tax Law Specialists that administer and serve the MFL and Forest Crop Law lands and landowners in Northeast Wisconsin.

A panel of forest industry experts will address woodland owners’ questions and concerns and discuss opportunities for management.  Landowner, Chuck Wagner is the owner of a 79-acre tree farm in Kewaunee County which he purchased in 1992, entered into MFL, and has planted trees 21,000 trees and conducted a timber harvest on. Chuck manages his mixed conifer hardwoods woodland for timber production and wildlife habitat and is currently dealing with the impacts of emerald ash borer. In addition, he’s planted Christmas trees on a portion of his property and enrolled another portion in the Conservation Reserve Program (CRP).  Aaron Burmeister, owner of Burmeister Logging has been in logging for over 35 years and has been a certified Master Logger since the inception of the program in 2004. He is a life member of WWOA and a member of the Wolf River Chapter of WWOA. Aaron is actively involved in a wide range of educational and training activities for landowners, loggers, and foresters. Bruce Krueger, is Vice President of Krueger Lumber Company based out of rural Manitowoc County, WI. He has been involved with the wood industry for over 40 years. Brad Mischler is a Procurement Forester for the Ahlstrom-Munksjö mill in Kaukauna. Brad procures wood including the biomass for boiler fuel, wood chips and round wood for pulp from Eastern Wisconsin.
